"MOROCCO: THE TRAVELLER'S COMPANION"

Margaret and Robin Bidwell (eds), (IB Tauris, UK).

This fills a much-needed slot, with excerpts from key writers of the past five centuries, including many translated by the editors from the French.

"POINTS IN TIME" "THEIR HEADS ARE GREEN"

Paul Bowles, (Peter Owen, UK), (Abacus/Ecco Press).

Novelista, poeta y compositor, Paul Bowles vivió en Tanger la mayor parte de su vida and more or less singlehandedly brought translations of local writers to Western attention. Points is a remarkable series of tales and short pieces inspired by episodes and sources from earliest times to the present day; the final piece is excerpted in the "Writers on Morocco" section. Heads includes a couple of travel essays on Morocco and a terrific piece on the psychology of desert travel.

"A YEAR IN MARRAKESH"

Peter Mayne, (Eland Books/Hippocrene Books).

Mayne went to Marrakesh in the early 1950s, found a house in an ordinary district of the Medina, and tried to live like a Moroccan. He couldn't, but wrote an unusually perceptive account explaining why.

"THE VOICES OF MARRAKESH"

Elias Canetti, (Marion Boyars/Farrar Straus and Giroux).

Impressions of Marrakesh in the last years of French rule, by the Nobel prize-winning author. The atmosphere of many pieces still holds - see the excerpt printed under "Writers on Morocco".
