"MOROCCO"

Neville Barbour, (Thames & Hudson/Walker, o/p).

A lucid, straightforward account of Morocco from the Phoenicians to "the present day" (1965).

"ROME IN AFRICA"

Susan Raven, (Routledge, UK/US).

A new and well-illustrated survey of Roman (and Carthaginian) North Africa.

"FEZ IN THE AGE OF THE MARINIDES"

Roger Le Tourneau, (University of Oklahoma Press, US).

Interesting if slightly specialist study of the Merenid capital of Morocco. Tourneau's The Almohad Movement (Princeton University Press, 1981, o/p) is also extremely good.

"THE CONQUEST OF MOROCCO"

Douglas Porch, (Macmillan/Fromm International)

Accessible and fascinating account of the extraordinary manoeuvrings and characters of Morocco's turn-of-the-century history.

"REBELS IN THE RIF"

David Woolman, (Stanford University Press, US)

Academic but very readable study of the Riffian war in the 1920s and of the tribes' uprising against the Moroccan government in 1956.

"LORDS OF THE ATLAS"

Gavin Maxwell, (1966, reprinted by Century/David & Charles)

Drawing heavily on Walter Harris' accounts of the Moorish court (see above), this is the story of the Glaoui family - literally the "Lords" of the High Atlas, where they exercised almost complete control from the turn of the nineteenth century right through to Moroccan independence in 1956. Not an attractive tale but a compelling one, and superbly told.

"WESTERN SAHARA: THE ROOTS OF A DESERT WAR"

Tony Hodges, (Croom Helm/Chicago Review).

The former Spanish colony of Western Sahara-Rio d'Oro is the most contentious issue of modern Moroccan politics: this is the latest, fullest and most interesting book on the subject. North Africa/Arab World

"HISTORY OF THE MAGREB IN THE ISLAMIC PERIOD"

J.M Abun-Nasr, (Cambridge UP, UK/US).

Morocco in the wider context of North Africa by a distinguished Arab historian.

"THE ARABS"

Peter Mansfield, (Penguin, UK/US).

General introduction to the Arab world, from its beginnings through to the 1970s. Short final sections deal with each individual country.

"A HISTORY OF AFRICA"

R. Oliver and J. D. Fage, (Penguin, UK/US).

Morocco within the context of its continent.
